Hurricane Irene Morning Update Aug. 26th., 2011

Don't let your guard down with Irene. Just because you may have woke up this morning and Irene is "only" a Cat 2 Hurricane, this is a large and powerful Hurricane. The storm surge will be higher then normal due to astronomically higher tides. Irene will have Cat 3 storm surge with it up and down the East Coast. If you are being asked to leave and evacuate please do so and heed the local officials warnings. My track forecast remains the same with a first landfall near Morehead City, NC, from there Irene will move right up along the coast with a possible second landfall across Western L.I. Irene will be a Cat 2/3 storm at landfall in North Carolina and then weaken to a Cat 1 during it second landfall. Again, I use the term weaken, but Irene will only grow larger in size as she move up the coast and this will not be a weak system. Below are some of the estimated storm surge numbers. In the end I believe Irene is going to be known more for its flooding rains and surge then wind.
Estimated Storm Surge Totals:
Wilmington, NC (North of Cape Fear): 5ft. to 7ft.
North Carolina OBX: 8ft. to 11ft.
Virginia Beach: 4ft. to 8ft.
Maryland, Delaware, South Jersey: 3ft. to 6ft.
