Hey I'm Rich and interested in tropical systems and general weather in my area.

2011 had a bruatally hot summer, setting a record for the most 90+ degree days.  We have had 73 such days so far, and our old record was 70 in 1998.   Records on St. Simons Island go back to 1948.

Weather the past few years has been weird and dry.  Every year since 2006 has had below normal rainfall, and so were 2001-2004.  In fact the decade of the 2000s was so dry that when our new normals came out for 1981-2010 our average annual rainfall dropped by 3.27" from 48.27" to 45.00".  2010 was our driest year on record, 24.27".

The 1970s brought us 98.1" more rain than the 2000s.

Here is my weather diary for the month of September so far.   I've been keeping this journal since Nov 2003 on paper with data from my weather station, and daily normals from the SERCC.  I won't dump all the monthly entries I promise! :)

Hmmmm when I see the entry it cuts off at September 1 for me. I might leave off my local weather diary and transfer some of my Georgia hurricane history entries in here.

Looks great...haven't read much on Georgia hurricane history so I'm looking forward to it.

  • Alberto headed away from land; TD 2-E a concern for Mexico
Tropical Storm Alberto continues to struggle against strong upper level winds out of the west-southwest that are creating a very high 40 knots of wind shear over the storm. These winds are driving dry, continental air into Alberto, keeping its heavy thunderstorm activity quite limited. While the storm is being helped by the fact it is crossing the warm 27°C (81°F) waters of Gulf Stream today, this is not enough...
  • Alberto weakens, brings light rains to Georgia and South Carolina
Tropical Storm Alberto continues to move slowly to the west-southwest off the coast of South Carolina, and is bringing light rains to the coasts northern Georgia and southern South Carolina. Recent radar and satellite loops show that Alberto has weakened late this morning, and has lost most of its heavy thunderstorms. Upper level winds out of the west-southwest are creating a moderate 15 - 20 knots of wind shear over...
